Caribbean Sunset, written for beginning band and optional Steel Drum Ensemble, was inspired by a visit to Key West, Florida. The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square in Key west is a time honored event where hundreds of tourists and locals gather each evening as the sun slowly sinks into the Gulf of Mexico. Musicians, artists, food vendors, artisans and lively street performers add to the sights and sounds of this unique experience. It is not uncommon for the entire crowd to erupt into spontaneous applause when the sun finally dips below the horizon.

With the growing popularity of steel drum ensembles, Caribbean Sunset offers an opportunity to showcase those unique sounds with the beginning band. Experienced ensembles may expand their instrumentation beyond the basic trio written in the work. Chords have been included on the steel drum parts for this purpose. Bands without steel drums will still find the piece enjoyable by simply omitting the steel drum parts or by utilizing a keyboard(s) as a substitute.
