Chimes of North Haven was written for the Great Bridge High School Honors Band in Chesapeake, VA. and their director Mr. Robert P. Carroll, Jr. for their performance at the Virginia Music Educators 2002 Conference. “North Haven” is not intended to reference any specific town or location. The images portrayed in the piece are of the various messages historically transmitted via an extremely simple and historic method of communication: the ringing of a bell.
The work is in three sections portraying first the hectic, modern life in a “big city”. Second a more pastoral section referencing a reverent tolling of bells. Finally the last movement depicts the more celebratory events often signified by the ringing of chimes.
