Fantasy on a Childhood Hymn was inspired by, and dedicated to, the memory of a young 7th grade flute player who passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The last day she attended school was the day of the Winter Holiday Concert. One of the last pieces the band prepared was an arrangement of the well-known hymn, Yes, Jesus Loves Me. Appropriately, Fantasy on a Childhood Hymn is comprised of two melodic ideas: this familiar hymn, and a simple “child-like” melody, first presented with a solo flute.
