Just before dawn on April 26, 1607, after over four months aboard the confines of three small ships, 104 sea-wary English colonists set foot on what is now American soil. The settlers erected a cross on their original landing site and named the site Cape Henry, in honor of Prince Henry of Wales, the son of King James I. The colonists stayed at Cape Henry for four days. Then, under the leadership of Captain Christopher Newport, the three ships departed on a journey further into the waters of Virginia, seeking a suitable place for settlement. On May 13, 1607, some 13 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts, the colonists founded Jamestown - the first permanent English settlement in the New World.
First Landing Celebration is an energetic and joyous concert piece for young band, written to commemorate the 4ooth anniversary of this historic event.
