Greenbrier Legacy was commissioned by the Greenbrier Middle School Band of Chesapeake, VA, and was dedicated to their director Mr. Tom Huhn in honor of his retirement. Because the work was to be premiered on his final concert with the band, Mr. Huhn was interested in a piece the students would enjoy preparing and performing. Therefore, the piece was designed with the students in mind, incorporating stylistic contrasts as well as rhythmic excitement.
