The melodic material in Hickory Bridge March was derived from a student composition project undertaken by 7th and 8th grade band students during a four-week summer band program offered by the Chesapeake (Virginia) Public Schools. The students were divided into small groups, each exploring basic compositional techniques, melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. Each group contributed a 4-8 measure melody, which were combined to create the march. The student composers were members of both Great Bridge and Hickory Middle School Bands, hence the title: Hickory Bridge March.
