Pavane pour une infante defunte was written by Maurice Ravel for solo piano in 1899 and later transcribed for orchestra by the composer in 1910. This arrangement for the modern wind band is dedicated to the Hickory High School Wind Ensemble in Chesapeake, VA and their conductor Mr. David Enloe for their performance at the Virginia Music Educators 2006 Conference. Although not a true transcription of the original, much effort was taken to retain Ravel’s exotic sounding harmonies and orchestration. This arrangement features a solo oboe, with alternate parts for solo flute, clarinet or horn to be performed at the conductor’s discretion.
